Description
The graceful jonquil with its nodding yellow blooms is a gardener's delight. A slender flower with fragrant, trumpet-like cups, the jonquil is also referred to as a daffodil. Belonging to the genus Narcissus, this elegant flower occurs in many varieties and produces blooms of white, yellow, gold, orange or pink. Although the jonquil is freely hybridized to create various daffodil species, the "true" jonquil is known as Narcissus jonquilla, a native of Spain and Portugal. This species is naturalized in France, Italy and North Africa, and is known for its reedlike stems and small clusters of golden-yellow flowers. Narcissus poeticus is found in southern Europe, and each long stem is topped with a single, sweetly-scented bloom comprising white petals and a yellow cup. The common daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) has the largest blooms of the Narcissus species, and is the ancestor of the large-trumpet horticulture varieties.
