Artist's Description
Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer, a life-long bachelor, was born in 1723. It is uncertain why Jenifer was given his unusual middle name "of St. Thomas." He may have received the name because of an ancestor who stopped at the island of St. Thomas in the West Indies before coming to Maryland. In any event, the name distinguished him from three of his relatives with the name Daniel Jenifer. Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer grew up on his father's plantation in Maryland, and received most of his education from private tutors. In the years before the Revolutionary War, he held the office of Receiver General and was appointed to the Governor's council. When fighting broke out in Maryland, Jenifer was president of the Committee of Safety, and later of the state senate. In 1781, he was appointed Intendant of the Revenue, an office similar to that of state treasurer. Jenifer took part in the Mount Vernon Compact, which hammered out problems of navigation on the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. Jenifer...
