Description
In the 1830s, America entered the Age of Steam. Miles and miles of railroads were built, and enterprising engineers threw themselves into the design of better engines. In 1829, Horatio Allen planted the seed when he returned from England with the "Stourbridge Lion," the first locomotive ever to run on American rails.By 1830, America had an engine of its own. The "Best Friend of Charleston" was another of Allen's designs. This locomotive had also been built in the United States. 1831 brought the success of both the "Dewitt Clinton" featured on this artwork, which was the first locomotive on the Mohawk and Hudson line, and the "John Bull." And, by 1839, the "Gowan & Marx" proved the power of American ingenuity as it ushered the railroad industry into the modern world.
