Description

The genus Colias to which the Dogface belongs, contains species found in the northern parts of the Old and New Worlds, with some offshoots that have penetrated southward into South America, southern Asia and Africa. The Dogface (Colias eurydice) is found all over North America. It is particularly common along the California coast ranges from central California to northern Baja, California. The Dogface reproduces twice a year with the spring generation found inApril and May and the summer generation, the larger of the two, evident from July to September. The adults frequently inhabit open oak woodlands and open glades in Douglas fir forests. This Dogface is a fast-flying, agile butterfly which is very fond of sipping nectar from purple flowers. The larvae feed on the false indigo which is a legume. The Dogface derives his name from the outline, similar to a dog's face, which appears on his front wings. There are endless varieties of Dogface butterflies, each differing slightly from the others in the location and color of the outline, in the exact tint of its wings and in the relative size of the dots which serve as eyes in the outline. Many of these similar varieties interbreed and produce still another variety. If the butterflies stay in the same area and interbreed, the variety may become stable and finally be classed asa sub-species, which adds still a third word to the butterfly's name.
