Description
Of the six subspecies of Mallard, Anas platyrhynchos, the European Mallard is by far the best known. Because this duck is so common, the beauty of thedrake is often unjustly overlooked. He is recognized by his green head, white neck band, rusty breast, and blue speculum broadly bordered front and back in white. His hen is a mottled brown with the same bordered speculum. Mallards have been domesticated since ancient times, and because of their adaptability to habitat, became the sole ancestral form of domestic ducks. The ducklings identify their mother by a contact call, and if the call comes from a human, will readily adopt that person as their "mother."
