Description

Cheng Shifa (1921-2007) was born in a small Chinese village in Songjiang County outside the city of Shanghai. He graduated from the Traditional Chinese Painting Department of the Shanghai Fine Art School in 1941, and held his first exhibition only a year later. Cheng served on the committee of the Institute of Chinese Paintings and was a member of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles. He was also Deputy Director of the Painting and Calligraphy & Seal Cutting House of Xiling. A student of traditional Chinese painting and illustration techniques, Cheng was awarded the prestigious Silver Award of Decorative Illustration in Leipzig in 1959 for his works in the Chinese classic "The Scholars". A master painter in the Shanghai Academy of Chinese Paintings, Cheng became best known for his traditional brush paintings of minority ethnic groups from Yunnan. His works are displayed in museums both in China and abroad.
