At the turn of the century, those who wanted to travel between Boston and New York in style did so aboard The Merchants Limited, also known as the "Five O'Clock." This beautiful all-Pullman train was owned and operated by The New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, called The New Haven for short. Considered the flagship of The New Haven fleet, The Merchants Limited made its inaugural five-hour run on December 13, 1903, stopping at Back Bay Station, Providence, New London and New Haven along the way. Because of its luxurious amenities and the fact that it left Grand Central Station at 5 p.m., The Merchants Limited quickly became the train of choice among Boston's financial community. On any given weekday, that city's most successful bankers and brokers could be found in the club car sipping the finest scotch with others of social eminence and political distinction. When suppertime arrived, passengers moved to the dining car to feast on the scrodded haddock, boiled Maine lobster and Cotuit oysters for which The New Haven was famous. Although The Merchants Limited was essentially a gentlemen's club -- male passengers outnumbered female passengers nearly 10-to-1 -- maids were available to see to the comfort of the few ladies onboard. The 4-4-2 passenger engine featured in this painting was built in 1907 by the American Locomotive Company.
