Description
Wings of red-orange, yellow, purplish-brown, tan, chocolate and blue make the Milbert's Tortoiseshell a breathtaking spectacle in the Montana countryside. Although this butterfly is much smaller than his relatives, these bright colors set him apart as one of America's most delightful butterflies. However, the butterfly's small and colorful appearance can be misleading, for the Milbert's Tortoiseshell is by no means a frail creature. On the contrary, he is as rugged as he is beautiful. As evidence of his heartiness, the Milbert's Tortoiseshell prefers the rigors of a northern home and may choose to live as far north as Newfoundland, Canada. Likewise, in the midwestern states, this remarkable creature has been seen even on January days if the morning has a hint of spring in the air. Thus, the high plains and mountains of Montana are the perfect home for this rugged butterfly, for the weather there is often crisp and entirely to the Tortoiseshell's liking. Many a mountan hiker has been enchanted by the sight of this regal butterfly flitting from flower to flower in the Montana mountains, his dazzling wing colors ablaze in the bright sunshine of Big Sky country. As a caterpillar, this resplendent butterfly lives in colonies, but later he becomes a solitary creature and goes his own way in the woodlands.
