Artist's Description
Built in 1782, the British transport ship Scarborough was a two-deck, three-masted craft usually rigged as a bark. Originally owned by a family of English merchants, the Scarborough measured just over 111 feet in height and was unusually wide of beam at 30 feet. In June of 1788, this impressive vessel set sail for Canton, China. Under the command of Captain William Marshall, the Scarborough arrived on June 25 at a collections of islands which were later named for Marshall. Reportedly, 25 of the island's residents welcomed the visitors, greeting the grand ship with chants and boarding it as they sang. The Scarborough lingered in the beautiful Marshall Islands for almost a week, visiting such picturesque spots as Majuro, Arno, Maloelap, Erikub and Wotje.
