Artist's Description
Measuring 188 feet long and displacing 840 tons, the Tanager was characteristic of the powerful vessels built during the steam era. Constructed by the Staten Island Shipbuilding Company in 1917, this craft faithfully served in both World Wars. During the final years of World War I she performed mine-sweeping duties in the North Atlantic near the Azores Islands. From 1920 to 1941, the Tanager was assigned to the Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor. Among the other military missions carried out by this craft was the transportation of soldiers and mail. At one time this steam vessel was also involved in a scientific expedition. It is believed that during one of these assignments the Tanager passed through the Marshall Islands.
