Often blooming before the snow melts completely, the hardy, compact pasqueflower signals the coming of spring. The blossoms, which are composed of sepals rather than petals, vary in color from shades of lavender to deep purple or blue. After the flowers bloom -- from May to August -- the styles become feathery plumes attached to the seeds. Both the flowers and foliage are covered with fine, downyhairs. The hairs and bitter taste of the plant are protective adaptations that keep grazing animals from eating it. Preferring well-drained soils, the pasqueflower ranges from dry prairies to mountain slopes of alpine and arctic regions. Pasqueflowers spread by thick, horizontal roots. Although the plant is toxic, when prepared correctly the leaves can be used to treat boils, burns and wounds. The Dakota people revered the pasqueflower as a symbol of spring's renewal of life, and used it in ceremonial rites.
