South Dakota sits halfway between the nation's coasts, and halfway between the North Pole and the equator. However, the state is located to the north of America's main travel arteries, and South Dakota is regarded by the many people who don't know it as a mysterious, rugged, frontier state unchanged from the romantic and sometimes bloody ways of days past. A youthful state, South Dakota lacks thelong history of the eastern states, the four-hundred-year-old Spanish traditions of the southwestern states, and the well-established Native American culture of other parts of the country -- even South Dakota's Sioux tribes are relative newcomers to the Northern Plains. The first Sioux and the French explorers arrivedin the area during the eighteenth century. The nineteenth century brought the Lewis and Clark expedition, fur trade, the gold rush to the Black Hills, Indian uprisings, and the birth of the cattle industry.
