Description
Silently it glides through the waters of a still country pond. Pausing now and again, it dips its head into the water to find succulent aquatic plants. Arching its head skyward, the mature swan spreads powerful wings and leaps into the air, flying faster than any other waterbird. But the beautiful swan was not always so. As a "cygnet," the youthful swan was clumsy and awkward, deserving the epithet "Ugly Duckling." For a bird so striking as an adult, the eggs are surprisingly nondescript as well, generally half a dozen or so pale, unmarked orbs in a nest constructed of rotting vegetation. But the eggs' plainness bellies the end result of two years of growth.
Best recognized today for his creation of the Fuwa dolls for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Han Meilin was born in 1936 in Jinan, Shandong Province. He graduated in 1960 from the People's Republic of China's Central Institute of Arts and Crafts. In addition to designing China International Airline's phoenix logo, Meilin designed four Panda stamps and one Year of the Pig stamp for China's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. In 1983, the United Nations selected six of his works as designs for Christmas cards. Also engaged in carving, engraving, printing, weaving and embroidering, Han has created many artistic works with various materials, including cloth, wood, clay, stone, bamboo, pottery and metal. Among his famous works are the 45-foot-high, 45-foot-long bronze sculpture Bull No. 1 in Jinan and the 27-foot-high, 108- foot-long granite sculpture Tigers in Dalian. Since 1979, he has held personal art exhibitions in Beijing, Hong Kong, Taipei, New York, Boston, Canada, Singapore and France, as well as many other cities and countries. During an exhibition in America, the city of Manhattan designated October 10, 1990, as the "Day of Han Meilin."
