Artist's Description

Thomas Fitzsimons was a delegate and a representative from Pennsylvania, born in County Tubber, Wicklow, Ireland. In 1741, he immigrated to the United States and entered a counting-house in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as clerk. He commanded a company of volunteer home guards during the Revolutionary War, and was a Member of the Continental Congress in 1782 and 1783. He also was a member of the State house of representatives in 1786 and 1787. He was chosen as a delegate to United States Constitutional Convention in 1787 and was elected as a Federalist to the First, Second, and Third Congresses (March 4, 1789, to March 3, 1795). He was unsuccessful in his attempt at reelection in 1794 to the Fourth Congress. He became president of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, and founder and director of the Bank of North America. He died in Philadelphia, on August 26, 1811.
