Artist's Description
Each year in the repeating twelve-year cycle of the Chinese lunar calendar is represented by one of twelve animals: the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Goat, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog and the Pig. According to the Chinese zodiac, each animal imbues those born in its year with that animal’s own unique characteristics.
Best recognized today for his creation of the Fuwa dolls for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Han Meilin was born in 1936 in Jinan, Shandong Province. He graduated in 1960 from the People's Republic of China's Central Institute of Arts and Crafts. In addition to designing China International Airline's phoenix logo, Meilin designed four Panda stamps and one Year of the Pig stamp for China's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.
