Each year in the repeating twelve-year cycle of the Chinese lunar calendar is represented by one of twelve animals: the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Goat, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog and the Pig. According to the Chinese zodiac, each animal imbues those born in its year with that animal’s own unique characteristics.

Zou Jianjun was born in 1943 in Changsha City in China's Hunan Province. She studied at the Printing Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts from 1962 to 1967 before beginning her distinguished career in stamp design in 1973. Zou designed well over a dozen sets of stamps, including such popular issues as Gymnastics, International Year of the Child, The 13th Winter Olympic Games and Palace Lanterns. Her artwork is particularly regarded for its subtle elegance and extremely fine brushwork. Specializing in drawing Chinese traditional ladies, children and flowers, Zou Jianjun became a senior artist of China's Postage Stamp Issuing Bureau.
